There is an Alarming Surge In Diabetes

The world Health Organization or WHO as it has been called, has released a statement stating that in 2014, There were over 422 millions adults who live with Diabetes which in itself may not alarm you. What if we told you that 422 million people is a 400% increase since 1980. Does that have your attention?

Governments around the world must act to ensure people can make healthier food choices, the World Health Organisation has said in a report (pdf) revealing a fourfold increase in global diabetes cases since 1980.

There are 422 million adults living with diabetes globally, most of them in poorer countries with limited access to treatment although the numbers are rising everywhere, says the report released for World Health Day on Thursday. That is 8.5% of the global adult population. In 1980, there were 108 million, which was 4.7%.

There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 begins usually in childhood and the causes are unclear. The big increase in numbers is in type 2, which is linked to obesity and decreasing levels of physical activity.

“If we are to make any headway in halting the rise in diabetes, we need to rethink our daily lives: to eat healthily, be physically active and avoid excessive weight gain,” said Dr Margaret Chan, WHO director general. “Even in the poorest settings, governments must ensure that people are able to make these healthy choices and that health systems are able to diagnose and treat people with diabetes.”  – The Guardian

As health providers, we try to push the facts of the matter when it comes to health. Not emotions. The fact is that as much as we would like to jump on the “body positive” bandwagon in hopes of making everyone feel good about themselves emotionally, the truth of the matter is that in America, We have a serious problem with obesity and health. True that being thin does not equate to being healthy and I’ve personally seen overweight patients far healthier in a sense than some thin patients. Yet the fact is that ALL of us could make healthier choices today in order to prevent many of these health issues in the future. A future that for many is here today.

Making healthier choices in what we eat, what drink and working against our sedentary life styles with cardio and strength based exercise is one of the only sure fire ways to combat these health problems facing us as individuals, as a nation and as a world.

Prevention is the key.

It is far easier for every involved from the patient to the healthcare provider to prevent problems rather than trying to correct the problem after it has taken root.
